A face moisturizer does not treat anything. It seals. That is a modest job, and it is exactly why people choose one badly: they expect serum results from it, then switch jars every two months believing the formula failed. The useful question is not "which is the best moisturizer." It is "which texture can my skin actually wear, morning and night, without shine and without tightness."
This collection holds 165 face creams from the professional lines our estheticians use in the treatment room at Spa Infinima, our skincare institute near Quebec City: fluids, emulsions, gel-creams, rich creams and mattifying creams. Read it alongside the serums and ampoules, which treat, and the cleansers and toners, which prepare. For everywhere else, see the body moisturizers: two distinct families, and confusing them is an expensive mistake.

Hydrating Versus Nourishing: The Distinction That Decides Everything
The two words get used interchangeably. They name two different shortages, and they call for two different textures.
Hydrating means adding water and stopping it from evaporating. Dehydrated skin lacks water: it feels uncomfortable, looks dull, and can be shiny on the surface while feeling tight underneath. It is a passing state, and it affects oily skin as readily as dry skin.
Nourishing means adding lipids: the fats skin makes for itself, which build its hydrolipidic film. Dry skin produces few of them: it feels rough, lacks radiance, and loses whatever water you put on it. That is a skin type, not an episode.
A moisturizing formula works on three levers. Humectants (hyaluronic acid, glycerin, urea) draw water in and hold it in the outer layer. Emollients (squalane, esters, ceramides) smooth and soften. Occlusives build the film that slows water loss. A good cream combines all three; a hydrating fluid leans on the first, a nourishing cream on the other two.
Skin can be dry and dehydrated at once. That is the most common case, and the one where a single texture never does the whole job.
Cream or Serum: Which One Treats, Which One Seals
A serum is a concentrate of low-molecular-weight active ingredients built to penetrate and work on one defined concern: fine lines and wrinkles, dark spots, blemishes, loss of firmness. It treats.
A moisturizer works above it. It lays down a film that holds the hydration the serum delivered, protects the skin barrier, and limits evaporation over the hours that follow. It seals.
So the order matters, and it is not decorative: serum first, cream second. Applied over a cream, a serum cannot cross the film already in place, and its actives sit on the surface. If you can buy only one product, buy the serum, but know it returns less without a cream over it.
Caught Between Two Textures?
The choice comes down to texture, and texture is easier to describe than to guess. Tell us how your skin behaves at the end of the day (tight, shiny, or both depending on the zone) and we will name two creams rather than a list of twelve.
Which Moisturizer Texture Suits Which Skin Type
This is where the real choice happens. Face creams sort less by promise than by their water-to-lipid ratio, and the same skin changes texture between January and July, more so in Quebec than most places.
Hydrating Fluid and Facial Emulsion: Combination and Younger Oily Skin
A fluid or a facial emulsion carries more water phase and fewer fats. It absorbs fast, leaves no shine, and layers well under makeup. This is the format for combination skin, for oily skin that still needs water, and for almost any skin in summer. Gel-creams follow the same logic.
Mattifying Cream: T-Zone, Visible Pores and Excess Sebum
A mattifying cream adds absorbing agents to the humectants, capturing sebum through the day. The goal is not to strip (stripped skin overproduces sebum in response), but to control shine and tighten the look of visible pores across the T-zone. Payot's Pâte Grise formulas, built around exactly this problem, are the best-known example in our lines.
Rich and Nourishing Creams: Dry Skin and Quebec Winters
When skin runs short of lipids, you give them back. A nourishing cream concentrates butters, oils and ceramides; the texture is dense, sometimes balm-like, and it warms between the palms before it goes on. It is the year-round choice for dry skin, and the December-to-March choice for plenty of normal skin, when indoor heating drops the ambient humidity. Keep it for evening if it feels heavy in the morning.
Soothing and Repairing Creams: Sensitive Skin and a Compromised Barrier
A soothing cream targets discomfort: diffuse redness, stinging, reactivity to temperature swings. The formulas are short, fragrance-free, and centred on rebuilding the skin barrier. A repairing cream steps in after an aggression (sun, cold, a peel, retinol introduced too fast) to restore comfort. Both speak to sensitive skin, but also, occasionally, to any skin walking out of a professional treatment.
Dehydrated, Mature and Men's Skin: Three Special Cases
Dehydrated skin wants humectants, not fats: a hyaluronic acid fluid will outperform a rich cream. Mature skin usually stacks dryness onto loss of firmness, and moves toward anti-aging textures built on peptides and collagen. Men's skin, thicker and more sebaceous, tolerates heavy textures poorly: a fluid after shaving, a soothing cream if the skin reacts. Normal and acne-prone skin find their own markers under skin type.
The Face Cream Brands We Use in the Treatment Room
Our selection rule is simple, and it explains the absences: we only sell the professional skincare our estheticians use in treatment.
Swiss high-end cosmetics (Valmont, Swiss Line, Cellcosmet) work with cellular extracts and firming complexes. Institute hydration rests on Babor, Payot, Yon-Ka and the Quebec manufacturer G.M. Collin. Marine skincare comes from Phytomer and the biomimetic approach from Esthederm; Aquafolia and Luzern round out the hydrating range with face creams developed in Quebec. For skin already used to strong actives, iS Clinical, Vivier, Jan Marini and Image Skincare sit in the medical-aesthetic tier: higher concentrations, backed by clinical studies.
Where a Hydrating Treatment Belongs in the Routine
A skincare routine does not need ten steps. It needs the right ones, in the right order, kept up over time.
Morning: cleanser, toner, serum, eye cream, moisturizer, then sunscreen. Evening: makeup removal, cleansing, active treatment, cream (richer if the skin asks for it, carried down to the neck). A mask or an exfoliant slots in after cleansing, never after the cream. Lip care closes the ritual.
The layering rule: thinnest to richest. And leave thirty seconds between layers: a cream laid onto a still-damp serum slides instead of absorbing. The full sequence lives in the facial skincare collection; for everywhere else, see body care.

Frequently Asked Questions About Face Moisturizers
What is the difference between a hydrating cream and a nourishing cream?
A hydrating cream adds water and keeps it from evaporating, using humectants such as hyaluronic acid or glycerin. A nourishing cream adds lipids (butters, oils, ceramides) to skin that does not make enough of its own. The first answers a water shortage, which is temporary; the second answers a lipid shortage, which is a skin type. Many people need both, especially in winter.
Do you still need a moisturizer if you have oily skin?
Yes. Oily skin overproduces sebum, which has nothing to do with its water content: it can be oily and dehydrated at the same time. Withholding hydration often pushes that skin to produce more sebum. The right choice is a lightweight texture (fluid, emulsion or gel-cream) or a mattifying cream that controls shine without stripping.
Can you use the same cream morning and night?
You can, and it is the simplest answer if your skin is balanced. But the needs differ: in the morning you want a lightweight texture that holds under makeup and sits well with sunscreen; at night the skin regenerates and accepts something richer. If you keep only one jar, choose the lighter texture and apply two layers in the evening.
How long does a face moisturizer take to work?
Comfort returns within hours, and the look of the skin (suppleness, radiance, a smoother surface) improves over one to two weeks. Past that point a moisturizer stops making visible progress, and that is its job. If you are waiting on wrinkles, dark spots or blemishes, the thing to add is a serum, not a more expensive cream.
