Nail polish worn on its own rarely lasts more than two or three days. What separates a manicure that chips on Thursday from one still clean on Sunday is not the colour: it is the base coat underneath and the top coat on top.
This collection brings together 19 OPI products, the brand our estheticians use in the treatment room for manicures at Spa Infinima: colour nail lacquers, top coat, base coat, Nail Envy nail strengthener and Expert Touch removal wraps. For hand creams, cuticle oils and accessories, round things out with our hand and nail care collection, which gathers all the nail care in the catalogue.
Learn more about nail polish and top coat
Top coat: the step that decides how long your manicure lasts
The top coat is the final clear layer that seals in colour. It does three things: it prevents chipping at the free edge of the nail, it protects the pigment from friction and household products, and it delivers the high-gloss shine that polish alone loses within hours. Two references cover this need in the collection, and they do not serve the same use.
Classic top coat or RapiDry: which one to choose
| Criterion | OPI Top Coat ($17) | OPI RapiDry Top Coat ($21) |
|---|---|---|
| Drying | Normal, roughly 10 to 15 minutes | Quick-dry, a few minutes |
| Shine | Mirror finish, very durable | Mirror finish, slightly more flexible |
| Best for | An evening manicure, no time pressure | A fast touch-up, a rushed morning, travel |
| Apply over | Polish that is still wet | Polish still wet, or colour already dry |
The first remains the reference for a full at-home application. The second is the one you keep in your bag: it sets the surface fast enough to avoid sheet marks or keyboard prints. Either way, reapplying every two or three days revives the shine and extends the wear — a habit that often makes more difference than the price of the polish.
Base coat: the layer too many people skip
A base coat is not a colourless final layer. Its formula grips the keratin and creates an even surface on which colour spreads without streaks. It also acts as a barrier: without it, dark pigments like OPI Black Onyx or deep reds stain the natural nail yellow within days.
OPI Natural Base Coat ($17) fills that role on healthy nails. If your nails are soft or peeling, OPI Start To Finish — available in the hand and nail care collection — combines base coat, strengthener and top coat in a single bottle: a practical compromise, less effective than a dedicated nail strengthener but enough for regular upkeep.
Choosing your colour: from nude to red
The OPI shades sold here are the house's permanent classics, not seasonal collections. You will find the same colour next year, which matters when you are attached to a signature shade.
Nude nail polish
A nude nail polish is chosen against your skin tone, never in the abstract. Bubble Bath, the brand's best-selling milky pink, flatters fair to medium complexions and forgives an imperfect application. Funny Bunny, whiter and opalescent, visually brightens the hand. Put It In Neutral and Shorts Story lean toward rosy beige and suit warmer complexions, while Aphrodite's Pink Nightie stays the most discreet of the pinks.
Red nail polish
Big Apple Red is the benchmark true red, the one that works on every skin tone. Malaga Wine drops toward burgundy and suits cool tones better. Miami Beet pushes into deep fuchsia, Dutch Tulips into poppy red, and 'M Really An Actress plays a classic red with a slight blue cast. Red nail polish demands a careful application: the smallest smudge at the cuticle shows, which is exactly why a well-applied base coat matters.
Gel polish and semi-permanent polish: what you should know
Gel polish, also called semi-permanent polish, does not air-dry: it cures under a UV or LED lamp. That is what explains its two to three weeks of wear without chipping. The trade-off comes at removal, which requires an acetone soak and mechanically pushing off the softened layer. Repeated every three weeks, that cycle eventually thins the nail plate and dries out the cuticle.
This is why we do not sell semi-permanent polish online: application and removal belong to the treatment room, where the nail is assessed before and rehydrated after. For extended wear at home without a lamp, the combination of base coat, two thin coats of colour and RapiDry top coat gives five to seven days of clean wear. That is less than a gel manicure, but the natural nail underneath stays intact.
Nail care: strengthener and nourishing oil
Colour sits on a foundation. If that foundation is peeling, no polish will hold properly, and the problem repeats itself with every manicure.
Nail strengthener
OPI Nail Envy is the most requested nail strengthener in the shop. The Pink To Envy version ($27) does two jobs at once: it reinforces the keratin and leaves a rosy veil that often works as a discreet manicure on its own. The usual protocol is one coat on bare nails two days in a row, then a fresh application every week for a month before going back to colour.
Cuticle oil and hydration
Cuticle oil applied in the evening keeps the skin around the nail supple and limits the hangnails that tear it. The Gehwol Med Nail and Skin Protective Oil and Top Chrono Rouge, both offered in the hand and nail care collection, cover this use, alongside the Payot, Yon-Ka and G.M. Collin hand creams. Apply the oil after polishing, never before: an oily film on the nail plate prevents adhesion. Toenails follow the same logic, with the products in our foot care collection.
Nail polish remover: why acetone-free
Acetone dissolves polish fast, but it also dissolves the lipids in the nail and the surrounding skin. Used weekly, that shows up as whitened, ridged, brittle nails.
An acetone-free remover works more slowly — five to ten seconds of pressure per nail — and treats the nail plate far more kindly. OPI Expert Touch Remover ($9) is our reference here, offered in the hand and nail care collection. The Expert Touch wraps ($7.40) from that collection make removing dark or glitter shades easier — the ones ordinary cotton refuses to lift.
Frequently asked questions about nail polish and nail care
How long does nail polish last with a top coat?
Count on five to seven days with a base coat, two thin coats of colour and a top coat, versus two to three days without those two steps. A top coat touch-up on day three easily adds another two days of wear. Short nails last longer than long nails, simply because the free edge takes fewer knocks.
Can you apply a top coat over polish that has already dried?
Yes, and it is actually recommended for reviving the shine mid-week. OPI RapiDry Top Coat is especially suited to this since it sets quickly without softening the colour underneath. On very old or already chipped polish, a touch-up will only lock in the flaw: better to redo the application.
What is the difference between a nail strengthener and a base coat?
A base coat is an adhesion layer: it prepares the surface and protects against staining, without treating the nail. A nail strengthener like OPI Nail Envy is a treatment that acts on the keratin and is worn as a course, often on bare nails. Some products, like OPI Start To Finish, combine both functions in a single bottle.
Does semi-permanent polish really damage nails?
It is not the application that causes the problem, it is repeated removal. The acetone soak and mechanical push-back take a little of the nail's surface layer with every cycle. By spacing out applications and alternating with a course of strengthener and nourishing oil, the nail recovers within a few weeks.
